The Impact of Movies
In the beginning of class Lacey showed us a video of a guy who talked about the impacts of the movies we show our children. He explained how princess movies are good for young girls to watch because they get to see how special they should be treated. Movies like Brave demonstrate to girls that they can have the power. However, I wont let my sons watch princess movies because they shouldn't feel like they have to complete a mission on their own. I want to show them movies about teamwork. For example, I will show them movies like the Wizard of Oz. This video made a huge impact on me because I am always interested in how to raise children. Not only for my own children one day, but also because I want to be an Elementary Education teacher and it would be nice to know what types of movies I should be showing my class. This being said, I will be cautious when deciding what movies to show my children.
Hi Morgan, You can do some similar thinking around children's books as well. Do you know the story of The Paperbag Princess? This one is a real counter narrative to the princess stories. (Even though Colin Stokes thinks pretty highly of the Disney Princesses, I am not sure that I totally agree on that part... what do you think?)
ReplyDeleteNo I have never heard of The Paperbag Princess but I will have to look into it. I enjoyed princess movies growing up, however, they do give girls the idea that a boy needs to rescue them.
DeleteI think your idea about the wizard of oz and teamwork is a good idea. Boys wouldn't like princess movies anyways.
ReplyDeleteShrek can be an all around winner. For girls, it is a princess movie but also teaches them that everyone is beautiful. And for boys, it teaches about team work.
ReplyDeleteI think your approach is very good! I feel that a lot of parents should have this mindset. I also feel that they should most definitely be careful of what they allow their children to watch! Media has a big hand in raising children now days; the big hand that parents should actually have.
