Narratives

I read Success, Victims and Prodigies and it talked about all the master and minor narratives. A master narrative is the overall theme of the movie and includes success, victim, hero and child prodigy, where as a minor narrative is all the little event that happen and includes winner, other, rebel and outsiders. In class we used Ferrils Bueller's Day Off as our example. We discussed how the master narrative is his successful day of skipping school. Along the way he experiences minor narratives, mainly rebellious ones. For example he stole his friend's dad's car and crashes it and also fakes a death in the girl he like's family in order to get her out of school and many more. I thought it was interesting how he got away with all his shenanigans and ended up being the hero of the movie. We typically think of heroes as saving people or doing a good deed for others.

  1. It took a awhile to understand the difference between a master narrative and a success narrative
